“Conservation of Grassland Birds in New England” By: Jonathan L. Atwood, Ph. D, Director of Bird Conservation, Mass Audubon

Grassland-nesting birds are disappearing in the northeastern United States. This decline is largely due to mowing of hayfields during the weeks that birds like Bobolinks and Eastern Meadowlarks are actively breeding. To protect these birds Mass Audubon is exploring new strategies for promoting conservation on private farms, as well as maximizing the value of grassland habitats located on sanctuaries such as Arcadia. In this presentation we will examine the distribution and behavioral ecology of the state’s common grassland birds, and consider how we can help these birds persist at a local, regional, and national scales.

Dr. Jon Atwood has been a practicing ornithologist and conservation biologist for 30 years, specializing in integrating behavioral studies of rare and endangered bird species with habitat conservation planning. While working at Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences during the early 1990’s he collaborated in the analysis of the first 30 years of Manomet’s landbird banding effort, and spearheaded federal protection of the California Gnatcatcher under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. From 1998-2011 he directed the Conservation Biology Program at Antioch University, New England, taught classes in Ornithology, Ecological Research Design, and GIS, and mentored over 70 graduate students working on various wildlife studies. During 2011-2013 he worked as Science Director at Biodiversity Research Institute in southern Maine. Currently he is Director of Bird Conservation with Mass Audubon, where he focuses on conservation of grassland bird species and impacts of climate change on breeding songbirds
