Work Party Recap – February
Even with all our wintery weather, DNRT’s work parties have been active when it has been safe to do so! In February we were able to go out for two of our three planned work parties, the third being interrupted by a blizzard.
At the Dike Creek work party our volunteers worked on removing Asiatic Bittersweet and other accessible invasive plants. Often, we have larger projects or more impactful areas of invasive plants to work on and cannot focus solely on Bittersweet, an invasive vine that chokes native trees. It was beneficial to the area to be able to target this invasive and remove it from a portion of the reserve.
Our other work party was at Knowles-Padanaram Reserve. We have been working for quite some time near the entrance on Smith Neck Road to remove invasive plants. As time has gone by, the hard work of our volunteers is really starting to show! We are seeing far fewer in the area, so with this work party, we were able to push farther into the reserve. Two large Autumn Olives were cut down, Bittersweet was removed from the tree line and we started removing Japanese Honeysuckle along the trail. Even with all the snow our work parties continue on, thanks to the efforts of our amazing volunteers!
